City break in Thuringia
Besides our hotel in Oberhof, there are plenty of other places to discover in Thuringia. Especially the cities of Weimar, Erfurt and Eisenach are worth a visit. Within easy reach of the Hotel Rennsteig or the Hotel am Thüringer Wald, you can discover Weimar, for example, the European Capital of Culture from 1999.
The home of Goethe is a popular university town and particularly popular with young people. Not to mention the city's cultural heritage, which stretches from Weimar Classicism to the founding of the Weimar Republic. Weimar is worth a visit and, as part of the Thuringian city chain, can be reached very easily from the hotels on the Rennsteig.
As the capital of the Free State of Thuringia, Erfurt also has many sights to offer. The largest city in Thuringia is known for its numerous half-timbered houses and town houses. The old town with its more than 20 churches and the medieval core is a wonderful destination for the guests of our hotel in Oberhof. Especially the Erfurt Cathedral and the Severin Church as well as the Petersberg Citadel are popular destinations for tourists in the Thuringian Forest.
Eisenach in the west of Thuringia is a very popular destination for a short holiday in Germany because of its many sacred buildings. There are numerous listed buildings, castles and palaces to discover in the city area. For example, Wartburg Castle, located above the city, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and large parts of the old town and the southern quarter are designated area monuments.

Cultural holiday in the Thuringian Forest Thuringia has numerous residential castles all over the state, especially along the Rennsteig. The reason for this is the historical development of the Free State. Until after the First World War, the state of Thuringia consisted of many small states, all of which had a residential palace and thus encouraged the construction of Elisabethenburg Palace in Meiningen, Friedenstein Palace in Gotha, Heidecksburg Palace in Rudolstadt or the Upper and Lower Palaces in Greiz. In addition, there are smaller castles and palaces that you can easily reach from our hotel in Oberhof.
Apart from the Rennsteig, Thuringia also has important ecumenical pilgrimage routes. The famous Way of St. James leads through Buttelstedt, Erfurt, Gotha and Eisenach. The path can be recognised by the signposting in the form of a scallop shell. Somewhat less well-known, but also easy to reach from hotels in Thuringia, are the Elisabeth Trail and the Via Porta. While the former leads via Creuzburg to Marburg, the latter starts at Rheinhardsbrunn and certainly ends for most pilgrims in a hotel on the Rennsteig. This is because the path follows the Rennsteig all the way to the border with Bavaria.
